Basically, the shelters are so overcrowded with dogs that they're only holding new arrivals for two days before the animals are euthanized. (State law mandates dogs be held for five days to give owners a chance to recover their dogs, but I'm told this is not being done at this particular shelter.)
I've heard from several people about an amazing woman named Trish who last week saved more than 40 dogs from this shelter. She heard about the overcrowding and was told all of them were going to be put down the next day, so she paid the $50 PER DOG fee and transported all those animals to different foster homes she'd secured. (Friends and fellow dog lovers have been working to raise money to help Trish with this heroic effort. I'll post more about this situation as I learn more, but I hope we can round up enough concerned animal lovers to make a difference here.
