Paws (and bones) for a cause

During a special Christmas in July drive, Nitro Public Library visitors can pick a "bone" or "paw" ornament hung on a Christmas tree there. Those who select an ornament can bring items listed on them back to the library to benefit homeless animals via the Putnam County Humane Society.

Some of the most sought items are cat litter, canned cat food, dry pet food, paper towels, bleach and laundry soap, said Library Manager Karen Boggess, who is also a Humane Society volunteer.

The gifts keep giving, too; each donor is eligible for a prize drawing.

"The Paw Tree is done in conjunction with our Summer Library Club; we have it every year," Boggess noted. She said those interested in volunteering with the Humane Society can call 562-0300 to learn more.

The tree will be up through Saturday, July 26. The Nitro Library, 1700 Park Ave., is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and closed on weekends.

For more details, call the library, 755-4432.
